Cast delivers an amazing, memorable performance

In this romantic comedy, “Crazy Stupid Love,” Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the life he aspired to all along — he has great children; has married his high school sweetheart, Emily (Julianne Moore), and has a great job.

His life is going as planned until his wife tells him she wants a divorce and confesses to having cheated with cocky accountant David (Kevin Bacon) who wants a relationship with Emily.

So, suddenly, Cal finds himself single and in the dating game again.

Even more horrifying, Cal sticks out like a sore thumb.

After watching Cal get sloshed in a local bar and throw a pity party for himself, Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), decides to take Cal under his wing and show him the ropes of dating again.

Debut album ‘fosters’ hope for indie-pop fans

After exploding on the scene at SXSW, Foster the People have released their debut album, “Torches”. Upon peeking at the tracks on this album you might question whether the former MGMT band was reincarnated.

But don’t let that mislead you. For the indie-pop connoisseurs this should live beyond those standards.

The most notable track on the album is “Pumped Up Kicks”, which has an undeniably catchy tune and melody.

Southside Target store hits the bull’s eye

Next time you’re cruising through Moore, keep an eye out for a big red bull’s eye in the sky.

No, it’s not a shooting range — it’s heaven on earth for southside shopaholics and families alike.

Oklahoma’s newest Target store, located at 720 S.W. 19th Street, next to Home Depot, opened last month.

This location marks the second Target on the southside, and the only one worth visiting.

‘Ghost Story’ a magical read

Somewhere in Chicago, there’s a wizard who freelances as a private detective and goes toe-to-toe with the worst the world has to offer, for the sake of truth, justice, and the American way.

Corny as it may sound, that’s the basic premise behind Jim Butcher’s “Dresden Files,” an ongoing series that’s 13 books in and going strong.

Released July 26, the latest book “Ghost Story” is one of the best yet.

The story pushes the main character Harry Dresden to grow and mature while dealing with the death of someone close to him. Well actually, it’s his death.

Of course, being a wizard, death doesn’t stick quite as strongly and he gets sent back to solve his own murder.

Cowboys, aliens in Hollywood

“Genre blending” is nothing new for Hollywood.

Screenwriters and directors have been mining the same literary deposits of inspiration that fiction authors have already claimed for decades in order to develop pre-conceived settings and story-arcs and interchange them with, sometimes-disparate counterparts.

This can be a successful transition (e.g. James Cameron’s sci-fi/horror classic “Alien”); but other times it can lead to failure.

“Cowboys and Aliens” is the film adaptation of the 2006 Platinum Studios graphic novel of the same name.

The stories diverge to a wide degree, but the overall premise of old-American-west drifters, lawmen and prospectors facing the onslaught of alien invaders is essentially the same.

Diggy Simmons lives up to his name

Most children want to grow up to be like one parent or the other but who knew Rev. Run of Run DMC would have a hip-hop child prodigy on his hands?

Daniel “Diggy” Simmons, the 16-year-old son of Rev. Run seems to be following in his father’s lyrical footsteps, but is determined to make a name all of his own.

“Great Expectations” is one of Diggy’s first singles released in 2010. This song is pretty much what is expected from the title. He raps about what is expected of him considering who his father is as well as what he expects from himself. This is a feel good, keep-your-head-up song and it should not be overlooked.

Numerous twists and turns abound in ‘Portal 2’

I have found “Portal 2” to be a very interesting game, mainly because of its many surprises.

GLaDOS, the main computer of the Aperture Science facility, is properly insulting throughout the first half of the game. You discover she (GLaDOS) has been around since the ’60s.

Over the course of the game, you go from being called a fat orphan by GLaDOS in some of the most clever ways possible to being the best thing ever for her (it? I’m just going to call GLaDOS ‘her’ for reference.)

In this second installment, there are two robots.

Wheatley, the helper at the beginning, is extremely foolish and the game explains why he is that way. This not only makes sense in the context presented, but the way it’s told is hilarious.

Get set for gripping final chapter

On Thursday, July 14, fans waited in line for several hours, braving the heat, to see the last episode in the Harry Potter series, “The Deathly Hallows: Part 2.”

It was almost midnight and young people were dressed in costume celebrating their favorite character from the volumes at Hogwarts.

There were many cell phone games being played, calls to friends who were not able to attend and much chatter about the events of the day.

But when everyone was seated in the theater, the lights went down and when the familar music began the room went from relieved applause to absolute quiet, and remained that way for much of the next two hours.

For many, this movie marks the end of an era. For 10 years, these fans have grown up with the H.P. franchise, and “Deathly Hallows” is like a rite of passage for them as well as for Harry and his friends.

‘Bad Teacher’ makes the grade

“Bad Teacher” is a risqué hit where a beautiful woman wreaks havoc on a middle school.

There’s no hint of how nasty Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz) can be when you first see her tucked into a dreary field of other teachers, standing out with her joyous persona — but not for long.

As her true colors begin to show, her filthy rich fiancé and his mother notice. She is dumped and left with what she had when she met him: nothing.

Elizabeth, who smugly spouted on her last day of teaching before her nuptials that she would not teach again, is back at Jams middle school for another eventful school year.

She definitely does not bring her “A” game but she does bring the mini bar and plenty of pot.

Artists over the hill, not out of the game

With so much talk within the hip-hop community regarding young rappers versus old ones, many ask the question: how old is too old?

Arguing the predisposition in hip-hop that rap itself is only for youngsters, it seems only fitting to make a list of the top “oldies but goldies” who are still making a big mark in the rap game:

First to the stage is Tech N9ne, who will be 40 this November. Tech’s new album “All 6’s and 7’s” is currently on the Billboard 200 chart at 59 and climbing.
