Officials say now is the best time to receive flu vaccines

To the editor:

“As much as 10 percent of the U.S. workforce will get the flu this year, with 17 million workdays lost as a result,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Cline.

“Receiving a flu vaccination from your local county health department, your physician, or any of the many places flu shots are available, is absolutely the best way for Oklahomans and their families to stay healthy this winter.”

Surprising random acts of kindness inspire others

To the editor:

This Monday I came to the office only to find a chipper co-worker going on about her other part-time job working at Starbucks.

It seems that a customer had come through the drive-through window the day before. The customer said, “I want to pay for the order of the car behind me.”

My friend said the customer’s own order was only about $2, but the car behind her had an $18 order. The customer said that was fine. She wanted to pay for it anyway. So she did.

Identity theft can be a horrifying Halloween trick

To the editor:

Oklahomans are very generous and you’ll probably be passing out treats to costumed hobgoblins and ghosts in your neighborhood this Halloween night. But be cautious that you’re not tricked by a different kind of trickster looking for a handout, such as your personal information.

You should always safeguard your personal information such as date of birth, mother’s maiden name, and your Social Security number. Why? Because it’s that type of information identity thieves are after.

You may think you’re safe simply by not carrying your Social Security card with you and not providing your personal information over the Internet or by e-mail. But scam artists have become tricky. Never reply to an e-mail claiming to be from Social Security and asking for your Social Security number or personal information.

Student finds lack of instructor respect disturbing

To the editor:

I am a student at OCCC working to obtain an associate degree in nursing. I have had courses at OCCC before, and I favor the one-on-one interaction the instructors have with the student population.

Currently I am taking four courses, including College Prep Math II with Professor Coffman.

After three class periods, I have yet to be satisfied with the respect the students show to the instructor.

Students talk loudly to one another and are disruptive during class lecture and computer class.

History prof corrects mistakes in ‘The Help’ review

To the Editor:

Regarding Ms. Johnson’s review of “The Help,” I would like to make several corrections.

The character Skeeter was not raised by Aibileen. Constantine was the name of Skeeter’s nanny.

Skeeter did not select her topic for a story in the newspaper as your reviewer implies.

The newspaper job was a simple column on how to clean and cook. The book project was unrelated to Skeeter’s day job as a columnist for the newspaper, and her topic for a book project was selected after witnessing the poor treatment of the domestics by Skeeter’s own peers.

Carson’s not student friendly

To the Editor:

It is the first week back and already students have begun to notice problems with the college’s available food service.

Students have already started to complain about the wait time for cooking food. Any student interested in eating after 4 p.m. should expect waits of five, eight, even nine minutes before their food is ready. While the College Union stays open clear to 6 p.m. they seem to stop cooking food at 4, well before the dinner rush, leaving students in a hurry between classes out in the cold if they are interested in picking something up quickly.

Annual walk seeks cystic fibrosis cure

To the editor:

It’s that time of year again.

The annual Cystic Fibrosis walk will be held May 14 at the Harn Homestead. The day and location are different, but the cause is just as important. With each passing year, your love and support has humbled me and given me every reason to believe we can fight his disease. I know we all have a story, a passion, and a reason to do the things we do.

Because you so graciously support Ryne each year, I just wanted to remind you of Ryne’s story:
