Student musicians to put on free show tonight

Student Blues and Jazz ensembles will be performing a free concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Bruce Owen Theater.

The concert will include musicians from two different campus groups, who gave a preview of their material earlier in the semester.

OCCC’s Tuesday and Wednesday night Jazz and Blues ensembles shook the student union with a surprise concert in the general dining area on Sept. 22.

“Winds of Faith” to perform here

OCCC’s Bruce Owen Theater will play host to Imani Winds, a wind quintet, as part of the college’s Cultural Arts Series. The group’s performance is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.

This will be the first time Imani Winds has performed at OCCC, said Lemuel Bardeguez, Cultural Program director.

Bardequez said Imani Winds is one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the U.S. He said they and are considered by many classical music authorities to be the nation’s premier wind ensemble.

Brown Bag serves up research paper advice

Student Life hosted a Brown Bag luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in CU1, and talked about writing research papers.

Communications Lab assistants Lydia Rucker and Nick Webb gave students tips on how to go about writing research papers, from start to finish.

Rucker asked participants if they got panicky when their professor tells them they need to have a particular paper done with six or seven different sources, to which various students murmured their agreement.

Shaky start for some clubs

Here we are at roughly a quarter of the way into the fall semester and it is time to check on how our student organizations have fared getting back into the swing of things.

According to a press release from Student Life OCCC has 31 active clubs, 26 of which were represented at the Leadership Retreat before the start of the semester, 23 at the Student Organization Fair at the beginning of this month and two “new” clubs.These are the Gamer Guild of OCCC and the newly re-formed College Republicans.

The general outlook of progress this semester from those interviewed is positive; however, some clubs have had a slow launch.

Recent Brown Bag serves up job advice

Student Life hosted a Brown Bag luncheon at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the College Union.

Student Employment and Career Services Director Debra Vaughn spoke to students about job-hunting through the online job board at collegecentral.com/occc.

Vaughn said many jobs on the board have a minimum education or experience requirement, and that people interested in jobs must meet the requirements.

Baptist group gains momentum

About two dozen OCCC students joined another 1,200 of their fellow Baptists at Momentum, a conference for Baptist Collegiate Ministry chapters from across the state. The Momentum conference was held Sept. 9 at First Baptist Church in Moore.

For the past six years, the Baptist Collegiate Ministry of Oklahoma has been hosting the conference and OCCC’s chapter has been attending since the beginning, said BCM Director Brandon Laib.

Students said they enjoyed Momentum because of the fellowship they get, not only with their own chapter, but also with others across the state, Laib said.

Collegiate Ministry Specialist John Strappazon, who oversees all BCM chapters across the state, agrees.

Fair draws many students

Representatives from OCCC’s student clubs and organizations gathered for their semiannual Student Organizations Fair at the end of August. The back wall of the general dining area was lined with booths allowing each club to promote itself and attract new members.

According to many in attendance, the event was quite successful.

“It’s been a block buster,” said Zack Sumner, business major and representative for the College Republicans and Christ Campus Fellowship.

BCM begins to gain momentum

Baptist Collegiate Ministries members from all parts of Oklahoma are gathering Sept. 9 for Momentum 2011, a collegiate conference sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.

The event will be held at the First Baptist Church in Moore.

OCCC’s BCM chapter will attend, said Brandon Laib, OCCC’s BCM director.

“There will be between 20 and 25 different BCMs, or a couple thousand people,” he said.
