Surprising stat about how Americans eat

[caption id="attachment_7425" align="alignnone"]restaurant[/caption]The other day, I came across an article on Yahoo that said Americans have officially spent more money in restaurants than in grocery stores for the first time since 1992.

Initially, these statistics were surprising, but after I thought about personal life, I realized this is nothing to be shocked about.

I love food. I have no idea how much money I actually spend on food from a restaurant, but I would estimate at least $10 to $20 a week. For a single person this is probably not much, because I eat most of my meals at home.

‘Normal Barbies’ defeats the purpose of toys

While surfing the web recently, I came across an article on Yahoo about “Normal Barbies.” The new dolls are called “Lammily,” which makes sense, because it also happens to be the name of the company. Creative.

These dolls “promote realistic body standards” with features like the average body size of a 19 year-old American woman, acne, stretch marks, and cellulite. Stickers that resemble scars, scrapes, stitches, mosquito bites, bruises and much more can be purchased to make your Lammily even more “realistic.”

First, let me tell you I played with Barbies my entire childhood. They had perfect blonde hair, perfectly painted blue eyes, flat stomachs, basically, perfect bodies. I had tons of Barbies, and they all looked the same – perfect. They all had cool clothes, cool shoes, cool plastic food. Their legs and arms didn’t bend. They didn’t have belly buttons. They were way cooler than I’ll ever be. But, that’s okay, because they’re TOYS. They’re supposed to be cooler than a normal person, which is why it’s so fun to play with them.

Ending No-Shave November like a man

Sitting at the sports desk today and gazing out a nearby window, I’ve watch a hundred scraggly tufts of unkempt facial hair (mostly neckbeards) go scurrying by shamefully. Occasionally a real beard passes by or a whimsical mustache, and I remember all at once that we’re chin deep into No-Shave November, or as I like to call it: November.

Soon the month will draw to its close. Some boys will be unable to bear the heavy weight of manliness any longer. They will go running for salvation in the shaving and shaving accessories aisles of whatever store people like that shop in.

Others will look upon themselves in the mirror and know that they’ve cultivated something truly glorious. In either situation, shaving will suddenly become very important. Even a great beard must be trimmed and edged carefully from time to time.

Whether seeking to smooth oneself completely or trying to keep an epic beard epic, a man must understand the tools of the profoundly masculine ritual of shaving.

Hunting Season

Summer’s almost gone. A part of me now rouses itself from its hibernation. The weather has yet to cool but already I can feel this primal thing inside me warming my blood. The fever will be coming on soon.

There are others out there who know this thing like I do, especially in Oklahoma.  There are others still who will never understand the thrill of the hunt like this.

I can already almost taste the crisp, silent air that comes in the black morning hours before sunrise. I will step as quietly as I can into the woods. I’ll weave through the forest guided by instinct alone beneath the light of the moon, hearing the forest creeping and alive around me as I take my place — this place where I will wait in stillness, allowing this great ancient thing for which there are no words to permeate through me. My mind and my soul will quiet and if on that day I am blessed, as dawn breaks, I will hear the sound.

Best restroom on campus

Letters from the sports desk …

Certain aspects of the college experience you will come to know well. You will be overwhelmed, your schedule will be overburdened, your mind will race and at times you are going to want nothing more than some simple, quiet place in which to take a deep breath and relax.

There are not many places like this available to you on the average campus. Even the library must succumb to the hustle and bustle of things for most of the day.

But there is still hope for attaining that one, glorious, peaceful moment that you may so desperately need.

Morning workouts a great way to energize

Recently I have gotten back into working out again and I thought I would try something new. I tried working out at two different times in the day and this is what I came up with.

All of the workouts were done the same way with the same pre-workout drinks and post-workout drinks, same vitamins, and the same workouts of the day, all done within a month.

The morning workout would start off at about 8 a.m. and would go until 10 a.m. giving me plenty of time to get to class.

Apple iOS7 update not ideal for music lovers

I am a huge supporter of Apple products. I have an iPhone 4s, a MacBook Pro and several old iPods so, I am definitely “Team Apple.”

In saying all of that, I must be honest. I absolutely hate the new update, iOS7.

I’m not one of those people who have been writing on discussion forums until my fingers fall off, but I’ve done my fair share of complaining to other people who have iPhones.

My phone, as with most people, is pretty much the most important gadget in my life. It’s how I communicate, listen to music, get on social media, check email, keep myself entertained. It does everything.

Bathroom hygiene important

The bathrooms at OCCC see a lot of use. Because of this, etiquette in the restroom matters.

Proper handwashing is important not only for your own health but for that of others. It only takes a few moments to lather up and scrub all areas of the hand, so don’t be lazy.

An example of the importance of handwashing is that when I was eight months pregnant, a worker in a restaurant failed to wash properly. Because of that, I spent a horrible month in the hospital in an isolation room.

My family, including my 1-year-old son, had to take painful injections to keep from getting sick.

Preparing for the zombie apocalypse

With Halloween approaching, zombies are on my mind constantly — with that my favorite show “The Walking Dead” has come back for its fourth season.

The show always starts me thinking about what my life would be like if a zombie apocalypse were to ever actually happen and to start making up a zombie plan of my own.

When I lived back in Mesquite, Texas. I worked for a koozie warehouse. Now for those of you who don’t know what a koozie is, it is an item that fits over a canned drink, that keeps it cool. Now, back to my plan. I would go and gather supplies in a Walmart down the street and gather weapons at a local gun store in the shopping district near the warehouse. Inside the warehouse it has a three metal lifted doors that could be locked from the inside to keep out the vicious undead.
