What’chu Talkin’ ‘Bout, Willis?: NBA season excitement

10 reasons why you should be excited for the upcoming NBA season.

1. Super Teams

Rather its big markets like LA, Miami and New York or small markets like Oklahoma City and Brooklyn. The NBA is set up for these teams to wage war at the highest level. Some people say they don’t like the way players are teaming up to play together. You may not like the process but you will certainly like the result. The NBA is getting back to the 80’s where you needed more than one or two really talented players to win a championship. The competition level will be up and so will TV ratings.

Body art discrimination should stop

It’s a question hot in debate: should body piercings be allowed in places of work and how much is too much? Many places of employment are becoming stricter when it comes to this matter. Some limit the number of piercings an employee can have while others simply ban them completely.

Places which serve food may consider piercings as a health hazard while others may limit just for show. My question is, are we violating a person’s freedom of expression by placing these restrictions? While I understand health measures and maintaining a sense of professionalism, I still think it is unfair employees should have to compromise when it comes to this issue. Even though an employer may make an employee take a piercing out, nine times out of ten it is still apparent that person has a piercing, due to the mark it leaves.

Drivers should be more considerate

When in traffic I often ask myself, “Why do people drive like inconsiderate jerks?”

I’m generally a very easy going person, but many instances of blatant disrespect for others sharing the streets drive me into a profanity-spewing rage.

Turners and lane changers not using turn signals, inpatients tempting t-bones by pulling out in front of traffic, idiots cutting others off and abruptly turning, slow drivers cruising 10 miles an hour under the speed limit in the passing lane, drivers rudely tailgating others they feel aren’t driving quite fast enough, and many other annoyances frequently occur on the roadways of Oklahoma.

Trumpet is a different experience

I just bought and started learning to play a new musical instrument. It’s a beat up old trumpet. I’ve previously tried my hand at playing the guitar, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. I was alright at all of these other instruments, but they couldn’t prepare me for the trumpet. It seems entirely different and harder to play than I initially thought.

Being a jazz head and huge ska fan, I’ve always had an interest in playing the trumpet, but I’m not ashamed to admit I wasn’t even sure how to hold the thing when I bought it, let alone make any sound come out of it.

Once figuring out a comfortable way to hold it, I tried to just blow into it. Nothing happened. Then I remembered hearing something about buzzing into a trumpet to produce a tone. So I tried blowing a raspberry. Eureka – Sound was born! Although it sounded awful, I was on my way.

What’chu Talkin’ ‘Bout, Willis?: Nike does it again

Recently, Kevin Durant unveiled a new colorway “Cutting Jade” in his new KD V.

After such huge success with the IV’s, many fans and sneakerheads are looking forward to the release of the long awaited shoe.

If you were to put the KD IV beside the V you would not think the shoes were from the same brand. The KD IV was made more for style and look rather than performance and comfort. The IV’s had great details in the upper and outer of the shoe thats why many consumers would “dead stock” (buy but not wear) their KD’s. The IV’s have a strap across the midfoot and has Zoom Air in the outsole. The IV’s sold extremely well but got low reviews as far as comfort on and off the court. Complaints were mainly that the shoe was stiff and took way too long to break in. There was nothing to take the impact from the heel when you are coming down 8 to 10 times your weight.

Why baseball is like life, and why that sucks

I really don’t care for baseball much. I love sports in general, and stay informed with the headlines of most all sports, but as for sitting down and watching an entire baseball game, I can’t say I have done that in years.

Baseball is sort of boring to watch. Not a lot of action spread out over a great deal of time. Today I realized that life is a lot like baseball, which is probably why I’m not a big fan of either one.

Baseball seems like the only job in America where if you succeed about 30% of the time (see also batting averages) you’re the best at your job. In my job at the paper, I’d be fired if I only did 30% of an article. Elite baseball players are paid millions of dollars to succeed 30% of the time and lower.

Confuse the sinner

Every time I turn around these last couple of days, I’m running into something I need to write about. God, I’m seriously considering hiding under my sofa for a few days to catch a break from being pissed. Unfortunately, I have dust bunnies. And that would annoy me.

Today’s anger comes in the form of a blog an old family friend posted in which he stated:

[T]o say that one’s sexual orientation — a characteristic that connotes action, in other words, one must choose to act upon one’s sexual preference– is the same in kind as the color of one’s skin — a thing that is unalterable by the act of the will — cheapens the human understanding of sexuality and ethnicity.

Take a break from stress

As a college student, it is sometimes easy to get overwhelmed with school, work and anything else we may have going on in our lives. With the constant demand of keeping up with these tasks, we sometimes lose track of how these demands are affecting us mentally and physically. Although it may seem impossible, it is important we take time out for ourselves so we can operate at our full potential. Here are a few ways you can try to make sure you keep your sanity intact through the semester.

· Go for a walk – Nothing frees your mind more than a nice, long walk or jog. Bring some headphones or simply enjoy the scenery around you. I find walking is a good time to reflect and sort through issues that might be heavy on my mind.

· Music – Music can be a great escape, and the best part is, everyone has their own taste. With access to literally millions of songs, it is easy to find music for any occasion, whether it be something to pump you up or calm you down.

If you play an instrument, pick it up and lay out some tunes. If not, pick a tune and make sure no one is around when you sing off-key in the shower.
