Campus closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The OCCC campus will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A federal holiday since 1986, the day was dedicated to honor Martin Luther King Jr., who was an important influence in the American civil rights movement.

According to www.history.com, the Baptist minister and Nobel Prize recipient, helped bring equality for African-Americans and influenced the federal legislation, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Tips for surviving the start of school

Classes for the 16 week semester start on Jan. 20 and the first few weeks can be a confusing experience. Erin Logan, student life director, said students can help themselves feel more comfortable with their surroundings by asking questions.

Logan said the campus can be intimidating at first, with the multiple buildings, parking lots, and levels. The answer, she said, isn’t getting lost until you figure it out. Find a table, a professor, or walk into an office and ask for help.

“We will have welcome week tables out the entire first week that will have schedule books. Faculty and staff will be around campus that their sole purpose is to ask questions to them. They can help students find their way, figure out what office they’re supposed to go to. The biggest, biggest, biggest piece of advice is to ask questions and to not be afraid to ask questions.

You might get stuck with seats in the back or undesirable seats,” Bardeguez said.

Film photographers deserve an ‘Unfollow’ on Instagram

Hipsters are taking over the world. By the world, I mean my Instagram feed.

Everyone considers themselves photographers, and anyone can be one as long as you have either an iPhone or an expensive camera.

I have both, which obviously allows me to appreciate photographs, so I follow some pretty high profile accounts. I am a mediocre photographer, as my ex-boyfriend so lovingly described.

I’ve noticed a trend in some of the photographers I follow, and once I see they support this trend, they typically get unfollowed. Film.

‘Normal Barbies’ defeats the purpose of toys

While surfing the web recently, I came across an article on Yahoo about “Normal Barbies.” The new dolls are called “Lammily,” which makes sense, because it also happens to be the name of the company. Creative.

These dolls “promote realistic body standards” with features like the average body size of a 19 year-old American woman, acne, stretch marks, and cellulite. Stickers that resemble scars, scrapes, stitches, mosquito bites, bruises and much more can be purchased to make your Lammily even more “realistic.”

First, let me tell you I played with Barbies my entire childhood. They had perfect blonde hair, perfectly painted blue eyes, flat stomachs, basically, perfect bodies. I had tons of Barbies, and they all looked the same – perfect. They all had cool clothes, cool shoes, cool plastic food. Their legs and arms didn’t bend. They didn’t have belly buttons. They were way cooler than I’ll ever be. But, that’s okay, because they’re TOYS. They’re supposed to be cooler than a normal person, which is why it’s so fun to play with them.

The Most Interesting People of 2014

Each year, Barbara Walters makes her list of “The 10 Most Fascinating People.” Now, I realize I’m not near as experienced or credible as Ms. Walters, but I think my opinion still matters, so I made my own list. I find these people inspiring, intriguing, or both.

10. Todd Chrisley

I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about this guy other than what I’ve learned from watching his show “Chrisley Knows Best.” When I first saw him and his five kids on USA Network, I knew I was in for a treat. I’ve decided it’s basically the rich “Honey-Boo-Boo.” These people are loaded. They live in a huge house, drive nicer cars than I’ve ever touched, and go to New York just to get their hair done. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s also the most hilarious thing I’ve ever watched.

OCCC employee achieves longtime goal with new position

Dec. 9, 2014, was a day OCCC employee Chris Snow will never forget. His childhood dream of becoming the Facilities Management Director came true.

Snow said after getting a job at OCCC in high school working in Building Services, he knew the college was a place he wanted to work the rest of his career. Achieving his goal was a long and hard process, he said, but he kept his eyes on the prize – becoming the director.

“I very clearly defined what it would take to accomplish that task, whether it was educationally, or learning what it takes to actually run a Facilities management department. I very actively took on those challenges and accomplished them, getting me ready for the opportunity,” Snow said.

Foundation offers spring scholarships

The OCCC Foundation is offering over 35 scholarships for the spring 2015 semester. By filling out a single application, students will be matched up with the scholarships they qualify for, said Jennifer Harrison, development director.

Students can then answer additional questions or essays that may be needed for certain scholarships.

Around 1,000 students apply for the scholarships each year, and although Harrison is pleased with that number, she said more students should take advantage of the opportunity.
