Life is learning

I was thinking about learning the other day, and how important it is to never stop.

Each day is a new experience with new things to learn whether it is about life or formal education.

Many think that after college and receiving a degree they are done with learning. It is something we see, as a pill we have to swallow, with relief after it is done. If you stop seeking answers your life will become an endless hamster wheel, never moving forward.

It’s never too late to become a participant

Students are coming and going from the college daily but how many of those students are actually involved at the college? How many are attending events?Job fairs, information booths, clubs, or any other event that is not related to their classes? I can honestly say I was one of the many students who didn’t do any of this.

To my excuse I always just said I never had time nor did I ever try to make time. This semester I decided to try something different.

I proposed myself to have two jobs, one at the college and the one I already had. The school newspaper, “the Pioneer,” was hiring. As I am a journalism and broadcasting major with an emphasis in broadcasting I decided to try it.

Find your comfort zone

Typically, going through a website like facebook doesn’t help me glean much insight into anything useful or thought-provoking but I was met with a bit of a surprise as I went through the usual timeline routine a day or two ago.

The revelation I had?

I know a lot of people. “Know” might seem to brave a word – I’ll settle for saying that I’m familiar with quite a few people that I’ve met through school, work, or mutual acquaintances over the span of 22 years. Admittedly, I’m a very introverted person and thats why the discovery of the size of my friends list was so surprising. It’s not that I’m shy or don’t like talking to people; I’m just not a terribly social creature and for that reason, I miss a lot of the social connections that most people my age have.

I know it sounds silly, especially if you consider that since we are all adults and as such, we will not get to spend the week living responsibility-free, as we once did as children.

Life will not stop coming at us and the days will certainly not slow down.

Laundromats are the worst

Ah, the laundromat. It’s overcrowded, overpriced, and sometimes overwhelmingly frustrating.

I loathe laundromats, but for some reason can’t ever stay in a place with a washer and dryer. This has left me at the mercy of many foul laundromats; from Oklahoma City, OK to San Francisco, CA.

First off, laundromats are always so busy. I show up at midnight, and still might have to wait for a dryer.

We should try to follow our own path

What did you want to be when you grew up? Teacher, doctor, president? Maybe it was a ballerina or garbage truck driver. For me it was pilot.

For my boys who are 13, 11, 10 and 3, it’s fighter pilot, soldier, veterinarian and “Abenger”, respectively.

While I’m not a commercial pilot, I do fly, but more importantly I am a proud father, student, amateur house remodeler and – if life keeps me on this path – future teacher.
