Students who find themselves scratching their heads about cell structure, or the molecular properties of hydrogen dioxide, can turn to campus labs for help.

Two science labs offer valuable help to students studying biological or physical science. Whether students are preparing for an upcoming test or working on a science project, OCCC offers quality assistance in its study labs, said Biology Lab Supervisor Virginia Hovda.

Each lab is designed to bring subject-specific tutoring to better accommodate all students. Biology students who enjoy hands-on learning can count on an environment with state-of-the art supplies, a comfortable setting, and qualified tutors,  Hovda said.

Models of all human body organs, cavities and skin, plus animal models and some plant models are available, she said.

Walk-ins are accepted but scheduling ahead of time is preferred for use of models and other equipment, she said.

“Currently students have to sign up for lab time in person, but that could change soon,” Hovda said. Software for signing in online for lab access is currently in the works.

The lab is the busiest towards the end of the week as exams and labs are being completed, she said.

All Biology courses use the lab for additional studying and tutoring. Online Anatomy, Physiology, (1 and 2) along with non-major general Biology IP are classes that use the lab on a consistent basis, Hovda said.

Nursing major Emily Connor said she goes to the lab to use the variety of models for her Human Anatomy class. “The tutors are friendly and knowledgeable,” Connor said.

Currently 20 overall tutors are available at select time slots. Tutors who work in the Biology Sciences Center are students with a degree or who are pursuing a degree in a field of biology, Hovda said.

From microscopes to models, and even dissecting pigs, the biology lab is a great place where a tightly knit team of workers help in making lab procedures go as smoothly as possible, Hovda said.

For students studying chemistry and physics, the Physical Sciences Center can be a big help.Students in the lab use the tools required to simulate a true science lab experience.

“Safety is a must,” said lab supervisor Stacee Trump.

“We have had small fires before and broken glass is a usual occurrence,” she said. Trump said she has worked in the lab for five years now and enjoys helping students.

Trump said students must sign up for lab appointments 24 hours in advance at the front of the lab. To use the Physical Science Center, a person must have a student identification card, must be currently enrolled in a class, and must have successfully completed a lab safety exam.

To find out scheduling for labs, students need to check in with the front desk of the lab, Trump said.

Students studying chemistry courses as well as a range of science classes available at the center. Tutors schedules are posted at the front desk, Trump said.
