Students urged to get involved in campus clubs, organizations
More than 20 campus clubs are expected to participate in OCCC’s annual Student Clubs and Organizations Fair, held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1 and 2 in the College Union, said Katie Treadwell, Student Life programs coordinator.
At the beginning of every fall and spring semester, Treadwell said, a fair is held to show students the many clubs OCCC has to offer.
Darin Behara, Student Life director, said students should know the many benefits of joining a club and getting involved on campus.
One of the biggest benefits, Behara said, is better grades.
“Statistically, students who get involved at OCCC have higher GPAs and tend to graduate and be more successful than students who just come and go to class,” he said.
Behara said, due to today’s technology, students whose schedules may interfere with club meetings and events can still be active members without attending a single meeting.
He said the Student Life website utilizes Campus Groups, a special website that allows students to join clubs. The website also allows club members to chat, view photographs, display event calendars, make announcements and more.
Students can access the site by visiting www.occc.edu/StudentLife.
OCCC has more than 40 clubs to choose from, Behara said.
Some students still may be unable to find a club that suits their interests.
“If you cannot find a club that interests you, feel free to put in a request to start a new one,” he said.
“That’s how so many of the great clubs started here.”
Other than joining a club, Behara said, there are many other ways to get involved on campus, such as working part-time, interning, volunteering or helping in a lab.
“All of it will look great on a résumé,” he said.
Behara said he hopes all students will stop by this year’s Student Clubs and Organizations Fair.
“Come see what we have to offer,” he said.
“You won’t be disappointed, I promise.”
