Recreation and Fitness Program will host the OCCC SuperSprint Triathlon, Saturday, June 12, at the college beginning at 7 a.m.

This one-day event will consist of a 500-meter swim, 14-mile bike, and 5 kilometer run.

The 500-meter swim will take place in the Aquatic Center, the 14-mile bike run will be a complete 4-mile loop around the entire campus, and the 5-kilometer run will begin in faculty circle equaling two loops around campus.

Hensley said he was confident that each participant would benefit in the weekend event.

“The goal of most people will be to just finish, not win, and believing if they can set a goal, they can attain that goal with their mind locked onto the prize,” she said.

Hensley expects more than 170 participants between the ages 12-85 to compete when the event kicks off on Saturday.

Registration is until June 9; the price will be $50 for individuals, $40 for youth, and $85 for relays.

Registration forms can be picked up next to the Wellness Center or online at https://secure.occc.edu/forms/RF/triathlon.html.

Midnight, June 9 will be the last day online forms will be accepted.

Last chance deadline registration is 9 a.m., June 10 until 8 p.m. June 11. Those desiring to register can stop by the Wellness Center or the Recreation and Fitness Office for more information. Cost will be $55 for individuals, $45 for youth, and $90 for relays.

The three courses used in the triathlon have been updated to make the race safer and interesting for everyone involved, Aquatic and Safety Training Specialist James Hensley said.

“For the swimming event, there will be lifeguard swimmers, traffic maintaining by police, and cyclists will have their own lane to cycle in during the bike race,” Hensley said.

Some other safety personnel include an on-call emergency team and an on call ambulance.

Marlene Shugart, head of the OCCC Triathlon Club and lifeguard for the Aquatic Center, said she believes these types of events require certain skills to protect all those involved in the activities.

“Paying attention at all times and reacting positively in the moment is without a doubt, crucial.”

Friends and family of the competitors are encouraged to volunteer for that day.

Prizes and awards will be given during the awards ceremony.

Packet pick up for competitors will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 11 inside the OCCC Aquatic Center. All individuals must show valid ID and proof of a USAT membership.
