The Department of Justice filed an Amicus Brief Wednesday night, excluding sexual orientation from the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“Title VII prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin,”

Earlier Wednesday afternoon President Donald Trump reversed an Obama Administration decision allowing transgender people to join the military.

There has been backlash since Trump tweeted, “After consultation with my generals, and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept, or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. military.”

Trump said the military should be more concerned with winning rather than focusing on the ‘the tremendous medical costs, and disruption’ that transgender people would cause.

However, some argue that the public should take the president’s words with a grain of salt.

“The Department of defense has even issued contradictory information,” said Troy Stevenson, executive director of Freedom Oklahoma. “John McCain’s office just put out an advisory that says this isn’t true.”

Stevenson said the President over-reacted on Twitter, and that his statement should not, and hopefully would not, be taken seriously.

Senator John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, disagreed with the President in a statement issued Wednesday.

“The President’s tweet this morning regarding transgender Americans in the military is yet another example of why major policy announcements should not be made via Twitter,” McCain said.

He said those who are already in the military should not be told to leave simply because of their gender.

A study by the UCLA School of Law shows an estimated 150,000 transgender individuals have served in the U.S. armed forces, or are currently on active duty.

However, for those who are interested in joining the military, McCain says his committee is reviewing the cost of Transgender people in the military, a group that only makes up less than 1 percent.

“I do not believe that any new policy decision is appropriate until that study is complete and thoroughly reviewed by the Secretary of Defense, our military leadership, and the Congress,” McCain said.

Piper Chapman, a transgender woman and LGBT advocate, said Trump is uneducated when it comes to the transition process, because she says that it is not the same for every individual.

“It seems that in Trumps mind, everyone who is Trans wants hormones, top surgery (the removal of breasts, or the addition of breasts), bottom surgery (the replacement of genitalia), and wants to do all of those while serving,” Chapman said.

She argued there are protocols people take, so that if they do decide to have surgery it will be at more convenient time for their job, and them.

She said that troops who are transgender would probably far down the ‘transitional road’ when they join, and that they wouldn’t be a disruption.

“They are not kindergartners being too loud in class,” Chapman said. “They are people with rights.”

Chapman also said she knows several people in the military who are not allowed to transition already and that they face a lot of stress, and suicidal thoughts knowing they have to live with people of their birth gender, and hide their identities.

“All because they are not accommodated, due to their human needs being viewed as nothing more than a ‘medical, and financial disruption,’ she said.
