Science Museum Oklahoma, Habitat for Humanity on the list for upcoming Service Days

As part of their Service Learning Program, Student Life hosts around eight Service Days every semester, and there are six left this spring.

“They’re basically designed to give extra support to some of our service agencies in the community,” said Student Life Assistant Director Amy Reynolds.

Next week, on Friday, March 9, Reynolds said students will spend their Service Day at the City Rescue Mission.

“They are going to have us do a variety of things depending on what they’re in need of at the time,” she said. “We’ve previously done a lot of painting, cleaning, yard work, sorting and other general maintenance.”

The next Service Day will not occur until next month, when students help out at Habitat for Humanity on April 14. Reynolds said it is one of the most popular volunteering spots.

“We are going to help with the building and painting of a house,” Reynolds said.

On Friday, April 27, she said, students will take to the streets of May Avenue near the OCCC campus as part of the Adopt-A-Street program.

Reynolds said students will clean the area of litter.

For the last Service Day of the semester, on Friday, May 4, students will visit Science Museum Oklahoma in honor of Space Day.

“We are going to help local elementary and middle school kids do projects and experiments to learn about space,” Reynolds said. “It’s really cool. We did chemistry in the fall; we were building things like rockets.

“The kids really enjoy it, and our students have a blast. We’re all really excited,” she said.

The registration process for Service Days is simple and open to all OCCC students. Transportation is available to service sites from campus and back, as well as refreshments.
