OCCC’s math lab offers students free tutoring

Free learning labs and tutoring is just one way OCCC focuses on student success.

One lab students should keep in mind for the fall semester is the Math Lab, located in the Science, Engineering and Math Center, just inside the SEM Center 2 entrance.

Math Lab Supervisor Christine Peck said the Math Lab provides free tutoring services to supplement mathematics learning for currently enrolled students. Peck said it’s not necessary to make an appointment. She said some math questions can be answered over the phone.

“Tutoring can be individual or group, but it is not private tutoring. We do not sit with the students for a certain amount of time. We answer specific questions that the students have.”

Peck said the lab offers a variety of calculators that are available to use while in the Math Lab.

Students who are enrolled in a course that requires a graphing calculator can lease one for $25 per semester, she said. The lab also houses a variety of textbooks, solution manuals and calculator software manuals.

“At the beginning of each semester we offer a calculator workshop for the students,” Peck said. She said a date hasn’t yet been set for the next workshop.

She said interested students can check the Math Lab website at www.occc.edu/meps/mathlab.html for more information.

The Mathematics Computer Lab also is located in the Math Lab. Peck said there are more than 100 computers students can use to access MyMathLab and ConnectMath to work on homework.

“The Math Lab can help with all math courses that are offered [at OCCC] and any course that involves math work like chemistry or physics.”

Lab hours for summer classes run through July 25. They are from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Peck said hours for the fall semester will be posted in August at www.occc.edu/meps/mathlab.html.
