Group hosting information booth for World AIDS Day

OCCC’s gay-straight alliance, Leading Individuals for Equality, is hosting an information booth from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Monday, Dec. 1, in honor of World AIDS Day, said Lisa Shaw, club president.

The booth will be outside the Communications Lab, Shaw said, and will include educational brochures regarding HIV, how it is transmitted and lists of locations around Oklahoma City where students can get tested for free.

Despite being 2014, Shaw said, HIV/AIDs still greatly impacts the community — specifically LGBT members.

“World AIDS Day reminds us of those we’ve lost,” Shaw said.

“Given a recent rise in HIV infections, it’s important to not only check your status, but the status of your partner too.”

Along with World AIDS Day, Shaw said, LIFE is excited to host an upcoming Christmas fundraiser to benefit SiSU Youth, a local non-profit organization in south Oklahoma City.

“Our hope is to raise enough money to assist with Christmas gifts for homeless LGBT youth in the Metro,” Shaw said.
