Adviser helps bring LGBT newspaper to OCCC

The perceptive person walking through the general dining area may notice that there is another newsstand in the College Union. Within the squat wire structure rests several copies of the special interest newspaper, The Gayly.

The Gayly is an Oklahoma-based newspaper that features news articles and editorials aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered community and their supporters.

One of the people instrumental to the process of bringing the publication to campus was Tennent Emmons, academic adviser and sponsor for the Gay Straight Alliance.

Casting call held for student-made film

On Friday, Feb. 3, a casting call for a student-produced film was held in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

The film “The Long Kiss Good Morning” centers on the events of a philandering senator and his mistress, but quickly turns to tragedy.

“We’ve had a big turnout,” said Yosuke Shingu, film major and production designer for the project. “I think it’s a very serious script with a tragic ending.”

New workshop designed to help club leaders

On Thursday, Feb. 2, Student Life began a workshop series designed to help the leadership of OCCC’s student organizations.

The workshop topic was about recruiting new members and was lead by Amy Reynolds, assistant director of Student Life.

Reynolds said the idea to start the series came about because they “realized that Student Life was providing resources at the beginning of the semester, but if [they] provided more then that would help clubs be more successful.”

Joining a club is simple

More than 407 students signed up for various clubs when Student Life hosted the recent Student Organization Fair said Student Life Student Programs leader Candice Parker.

According to fair sign up sheets, those clubs which drew the largest number of new members were The Nursing Student Organization with 52 new members, The Black Student Association with 51 members, Health Professions with 49 new members and The Gamer Guild with 46 new members.

Those who missed the fair can still join a club, Parker said.

“You would go to www.campusgroups.com. Once you register with your student email, the list of all the clubs and organizations at OCCC comes up,” she said.

Food Bank trip set for Feb. 10

Student Life will gather students to participate in a service learning event from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

“This is actually one of our more popular service days,” Amy Reynolds, First Year Experience and Student Life programs coordinator, said.

“People really enjoy going to the Food Bank. They have really upbeat staff that work there … they really do a good job of showing you what your impact is for that day, so we typically have anywhere from 15 to 20 students that go.”

Entries for V-Day essay contest due Thursday

Student Life is hosting an essay-writing contest that celebrates relationships in lieu of Valentine’s Day.

Contest winners will receive a complete date package for Valentine’s Day that includes a banquet dinner, serenade, dessert, and concert.

Rachel Olsen, Communications Lab and World Languages Center supervisor, offered suggestions.

“Make sure to use vivid examples and explanations to develop your ideas,” Olsen said. “It seems like the prompts are asking for a persuasive essay, so students writing should have a clear idea of what they want to convince the reader of.”

Director Whisenhunt to discuss online learning in next week’s Brown Bag

The second Brown Bag session of the semester is to take place at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the College Union. First Year Experience and Student Life Programs Coordinator Amy Reynolds said the theme is going to be online learning.

Occurring once at the beginning of every semester, Reynolds said the purpose is to help put students at ease with the thought.

“Some students get really nervous, because it can be intimidating,” Reynolds said.

“We have a lot of students that take online classes.”

SEMSA hosts CPR training workshop for students

On Friday, Jan. 27, the Student Emergency Medical Sciences Association (SEMSA) conducted a CPR training workshop based on the guidelines from the American Heart Association.

Lead instructor Bill Grayson and students noted that the AHA guidelines are different than other CPR training they typically receive.

“In EMT you learn the order, A (airway), B (breathing), C (circulation), but in this you will be concerned with C, A, and B,” Grayson said.
