Counselor discusses ‘disordered eating’

College age women, or even younger, are most prone to disordered eating, said Rebecca Williams, a licensed professional counselor who works with clients dealing with this issue.

In a speech on campus Feb. 22, Williams said “disordered eating” is the term used by professionals. Fifteen percent of women 17 to 24 years old suffer from this problem, she said.

Disordered eating is an attitude about food, weight, and body size that significantly affects your life in a negative way, Williams said. Eating disorders affect more women then men.

Service learning days offered

Whether its helping the homeless, the hungry or the helpless, OCCC is not a stranger to serving the community. The college is proud to have the ability to give back to the public, especially by getting students involved.

Student Life offers a program called Service Learning. The program schedules at least eight service days in a semester, said Amy Reynolds, assistant director of Student Life. During a Service Learning trip, transportation, snacks, meals and beverages are provided by OCCC.

Erin Peden, journalism major, said, she enjoys giving back to the community. Peden said she volunteers for the Regional Food Bank, Birthdays Made With Love and Meals On Wheels.

Hopes and utensils fly in ‘Scapino!’ this week

The comedy “Scapino!” will be performed on campus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 through 26, in the Bruce Owen Theater.

“Scapino!” was written originally by French playwright Moliere and later adapted by Jim Dale and Frank Dunlop. This classic Italian comedy takes place in Naples, Italy.

The play is about two young men, who are left by their fathers in the care of two not-so-attentive servants.

Eating disorder awareness week kicks off Monday

From Monday, Feb. 20 to Thursday, Feb. 23, Student Life will have an information table set up in the foyer outside the General Dining Area related to Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

The table will have buttons to heighten exposure to the issue as well as information regarding what eating disorders are, how to prevent and recognize disorders, and resources for help.

“We want to present students with a whole, healthy, body-image,” Amy Reynolds, Student Life assistant director, said. “And that they can love themselves how they are.

First StrengthsQuest workshop focuses on personal strengths

A modest number of students attended the first ever StrengthsQuest workshop at noon Monday, Feb. 13, in room 2F2 in the Arts and Humanities Building.

First Year Experience and Student Life Programs Coordinator Amy Reynolds said the hour-long come-and-go session’s theme was all about exploring your personal strengths.

In a few quick and easy steps, students walked into the quiet, computer-filled room, received an instructional handout, took a 30-minute online assessment, and left with their individual results. “It’s pretty interesting and crazy how accurate the results are,” Reynolds said.

President’s Leadership Class deadline March 9

Handouts, emails and other means of advertising have recently gone viral to spread the news of the upcoming application deadline for fall’s President’s Leadership Class II, the time and date of the deadline being at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 9.

Student Life Director Erin Logan said application registration has been open for just two weeks now and already 12 students have applied.

To give students the opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the 2-credit division elective course, Logan said, three information sessions are to be held.

Opportunities to volunteer open

Building a house for the homeless or providing food for the hungry are just two of the community services students can sign up for at the volunteer fair.

The volunteer fair will run from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm on Feb. 14 in the General Dining Area and will have 25 organizations available to choose from.

Students will be given the opportunity to help different organizations around the Oklahoma City area such as The Salvation Army, the United Way, the March of Dimes, and the City Rescue Mission.

Both mechanical engineering major Rodolfo Monsivais and music major Lorrie Cobart are in the Civic Honors program and said they enjoy performing community service.

“I think it’s something that everybody should participate in, because we’re all helping each other in some capacity anyway,” Cobart said.

Two writing workshops to be held next Monday

The second workshop in the Communications Lab’s spring writing workshop series will be held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13 in CU2.

“Telling Your Story: Writing a Narrative” and will cover the topic of writing narrative essays.

“Whether they are in English Comp I or Comp II, students will have to write an essay where they make a claim and then they support with a personal experience or write about an experience that changed their lives,” Lydia Rucker, Communications Lab assistant, said. “That is a narrative.”

Rucker explained that narratives differ from most college writing.
