Student Life will be hosting a car care Brown Bag at noon on Wednesday, April 11, in CU1 said Student Life Assistant Director Amy Reynolds.

“We haven’t confirmed the specific host yet,” she said, “but we have asked a student who is familiar with, knowledgeable about and has experience with the topic to present the basics.”

Special Olympics help needed

Special Olympics Oklahoma is returning to Norman on April 14 and Student Life is hosting a service day to help provide a good experience for the participants, their families and the students themselves.

According to specialolympics.org the Special Olympics has been providing people with intellectual disabilities with continuing opportunities to get fit, demonstrate their courage and have fun since 1968.

Amy Reynolds, first year and Student Life program coordinator, said students will meet in the Student Life office at 7:45 a.m., and leave OCCC at 8 a.m. Reynolds said students should be returning to campus around 3 p.m. Time spent at the Olympics counts towards the civic honors program at OCCC.

Students give up Saturday to help those in need

You wouldn’t think getting up early to work for free on Saturday would be fun. But 15 OCCC students learned this to be true on March 17 at the Regional Food Bank near Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City.

Most of the helpers at the food bank are volunteers from all over the metro, giving up their free time to meet the needs of the hungry, said Liz Brandon, volunteer supervisor.

The atmosphere at the food bank was positive, even on an early Saturday morning.

Disaster prep on tomorrow’s Brown Bag menu

A storm is brewing in the College Union.

Student Life is hosting a disaster prep Brown Bag at noon on Wednesday, April 4, in CU1, said Assistant Director Amy Reynolds.

“We host it at least once a year, especially in the spring … when tornado season seems to be in full effect around here,” Reynolds said.

Discussed topics include what to do in case of natural disasters like tornadoes, hail, floods, earthquakes, and other general severe storms and weather conditions

Domestic violence, sexually transmitted diseases focus of healthy relationship Brown Bag

Abuse is not a joke. Neither is disease.

Jennifer Halpin, nursing professor, discussed both of these topics at a Student Life hosted Brown Bag about healthy relationships.

The presentation was divided into two segments with the first about emotionally healthy relationships and the second about sexual health. The sexual health segment was further divided into two categories: family planning and disease prevention.

One in three U.S. families affected by Alzheimer’s, study says

With statistics like an estimated 5.4 million Americans that have it and 1 in 3 families in the U.S. affected by it, Alzheimer’s is a growing concern to many Americans.

To help educate on this topic Student Life hosted a Brown Bag workshop directed by Amy Padilla, community outreach coordinator and Sarah Jones, walk coordinator from the Central Oklahoma Office of the Oklahoma and Arkansas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association on Wednesday, March 28.

The presentation opened even before introductions with the above video which set the tone for the overall discussion.

Dating Doctor visit goes off without a ‘hitch’

Finding a lifelong companion to marry is a daunting task, one that many college students are hesitant to take on, said a speaker on campus March 13.

“People are single because they don’t know what to look for,” said David Coleman, the Dating Doctor, in a speech on “Making Relationships Matter.”

About 60 students gathered in the student union to listen to Coleman’s presentation.

He talked about recognizing signs that a person might be interested in dating and how to give signs that you are interested.

He said one of the key signs of interest is eye contact. If a potential partner tries for eye contact and holds it, that it is an early sign.

Library accepting entries for video contest

To celebrate National Library Week, which is the first week in April, the OCCC Library has asked students, faculty, and staff to submit videos for their contest, “What I love about the OCCC Library.”

Electronic Services and Reference Librarian Amanda Lemon said that the Library Marketing Committee is looking for different perspectives.

“We’re hoping to see something that people love about the library that we don’t necessarily see,” Lemon said.

Students should stick to their degree plan

Transferring from OCCC to a university can result in culture shock at first, said Linda Little, coordinator of transfer and academic advising.

It is very common for the GPA of students transferring to a four year college to drop the first semester, Little said.

“There are a lot of things to adjust to.”

The culture, the environment, and the expectations may be a different.

“In some ways it is a little bit like starting over again,” Little said.

OCCC pre-engineering graduate Oussama Zouaoui said he understands exactly what Little is talking about – because it happened to him when he transferred to the University of Oklahoma.

Campus clubs see blue on Student Involvement Day

Over 100 students wore blue long-sleeve shirts despite the temperature being in the upper 70s on Wednesday, March 14.

Students representing various activities came together under the direction of Student Life for Student Involvement Day, the first celebration of extra-curricular activities the school has put on.

Mariah Fernandez, Native American Student Association representative, said student involvement was very high.
